• Introduction

The School of Journalism and Communication (SJC), formerly the International Journalism Program established in 1983, has stood out as an educational and research institution featuring global journalism and international communication in China during the past four decades.

The School has five undergraduate programs in journalism, online journalism and new media, radio and television, advertising, and international journalism and communication. Among them, journalism and online journalism and new media are top-notch undergraduate programs at the national level in China. It also has three academic MA programs in journalism, communication, and advertising, as well as one professional MA program in journalism and communication and one PhD. program in global communication.

Since 2011, the School, in cooperation with Xinhua News Agency, has pioneered an integrated educational model of “multilingualism + international journalism and communication” in China. The model aims to train inter-disciplinary students who have learned two foreign languages to become more acquainted with international media literacy and international communication norms. The multilingual model in international journalism received a First-class Teaching Award from the Shanghai Municipal Government in 2017.

The School has long focused on research in global journalism and  communication. During the past five years, the school has published over 30 academic books and more than 200 papers, including a book series  on global communication and China discourse and a textbook series on global journalism and communication. More than 50 research and teaching projects received national-level or provincial-level funding.

Since 2022, in cooperation with the German publisher Walter De Gruyter, the School has launched Online Media and Global Communication (OMGC), an open access English journal which publishes four issues every year, serving as an academic platform for  English and multilingual scholars across the world, with abstracts released in eight foreign languages (omgc.shisu.edu.cn).

The School boasts a team of highly competitive faculty members, with 50% professors and associate professors. Faculty members have won high-profile titles like Excellent Scholars in China and Excellent Scholars in Shanghai.

The School has attached great importance to international cooperation and academic activities. The school enrolls international students at all levels and sends Chinese students to universities in the U.S.A., Britain, Australia, France, Holland under different exchange programs with foreign counterparts.

The School has also hosted and sponsored high-level international conferences, including the Dean’s Forum for Asian Schools of Journalism and Communication, Dialogue on Asian Civilizations and International Communication, the Belt and Road Media Workshop. Since 2017, it has held an annual Forum on Image Studies and Global Communication, which has become an academic brand in China.  

The School also features hands-on professional training for students.  It has been running media production projects in cooperation with main stream media and media companies, including the English News Room for Shanghai Songjiang APP (with Songjiang District Media Convergence Center), Yichang International Communication Media Platform (with Yichang City Media Center), International News Fact Checking (with the paper.cn), Video Translation and Dubbing Workshop (with Shanghai Movie Translation and Dubbing Studio). These media projects have helped students enhance their understanding of media and communication and sharpen their competitiveness in more media production and have won awards at the national-level or provincial-level competitions.
