SISU Alumnus Zhang Hanhui



China’s New Ambassador to Russia, Zhang Hanhui, arrived in Moscow and took up his appointment on August 10. Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Russian Federation welcomed the new ambassador at the Sheremetyevo Alexander S. Pushkin International Airport.

Zhang said to the journalists that the main goal of the Chinese ambassador to Russia is to strengthen the relationship between the two countries and their people.

“Being China’s ambassador to Russia is a dream for every specialist in Russian philology. For me, this dream has come true,” he told reporters upon arrival in Moscow.

“At present, I have a mixed feeling. On one hand, I am overjoyed. It is my great honor to work in Russia and with friends here.”

“On the other hand, I feel a great deal of responsibility. I know that Chinese-Russian relations are very important. We will work together to make relations between our countries and our peoples closer and implement the agreements reached by our leaders to take our relations and mutually beneficial cooperation to a qualitatively new level,” the diplomat concluded.

Zhang Hanhui was born in Jianping, Liaoning Province in October 1963. He studied Russia philology in SISU. After graduation, he served as the Third Secretary of the Department of European-Central Asian Affairs, then vice director of the Department of European-Central Asian Affairs, then director of the Department of European-Central Asian Affairs. From 2014 to 2018, he was named as China’s Ambassador to Kazakhstan. In 2019, he was appointed Vice Foreign Minister in charge of relations with European and Central Asian countries.
